Single voice: the origin of "Recitar Cantando"
by Marco Beasley

The Greek world, which is the root of the Western culture, has always had a certain charm and influence on the artists of every era. Between the sixteenth and seventeenth century, there was a huge musical change in terms of style. In simple terms, we can say it shifted from the realm of poliphony to that of an accompanied monody. The latter was developed with the intention to awaken a listener's passion through the intrinsic and dramatic relationships that exist amongst men more so than through their unchanging relationship with the divine one. The desire to recreate the magical symbiosis that exists between a text and Greek lyrical music is the foundation of the melodic invention. It is not by chance that the first experiments of this kind depicted subjects such as Orpheus, a figure that synthesizes poetry and music more than any other, therefore setting the first pillar of a building called the "opera house", more generally known as a "musical theater": a building in which we can recognize one of the many transfigurations of the Greek theater.

During the masterclass days, we will cover the songs I believe to be most representative of this transitional period, as far as the musical history of Italy is concerned. Therefore, we will cover a period of almost one-hundred years, starting from the music of masters such as Tromboncino and Cara, towards the Rappresentazione by Cavalieri, and all the way up to Monteverdi's Orpheus and Combattimento; all central representations of the great theatrical art of music.

There will be a specific area where we can perform songs - mainly polyphonic - from the traditional oral repertory together on a daily basis. The objective of this educational method is to develop a personal vocal technique (breathing, sound, intonation) that privileges listening to others through the use of apparently simple songs; happy and emotional testimonials of a certain cultural depth.
